Outreach & Retention Manager: Jessica Clemente Born and raised in the
Mott Haven section of the Bronx, my role is to coordinate all aspects of
community outreach including activities that will help promote local awareness
of SOL, support recruitment efforts and achieve maximum possible retention of
study participants throughout the study follow-up period. I have a Masters in
Urban Planning (concentration in Environmental Planning) and a Bachelor of
Science degree in Environmental Science. I have experience in environmental
health research, community outreach and education. I formerly served as project
manager for the South Bronx Environmental Health and Policy Study sponsored by
US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Congressman Jose E. Serrano in
partnership with four local community organizations, The Point Community
Development Corporation, We Stay/Nos Quedamos, Sports Foundation Inc., and
Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice Inc. The study focused on environmental
and health issues affecting the South Bronx, with particular emphasis on the
relationships between air quality, transportation, waste transfer activity,
demographic characteristics, and public health. I felt drawn to working with
HCHS/SOL because of the opportunity for me to share the importance of this
monumental study within my community. Working in the community is especially
gratifying to me because it gives me the opportunity to assess current community
concerns, build awareness and be a part of the change.
